COPE and Climbing Instructor

I am a level 2 climbing instructor for the Scouts. This role has me managing group climbing outings. I am also responsible for the safety of all participants and other instructors. As a COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) instructor, our job is to lead small groups through a series of exercises designed to build leadership, effective group dynamics and teamwork. This is followed by a short debrief after every exercise to guide conversation around what was effective, what was not and how they can improve in the future.

• Lead 30+ scouts in bouldering, top-rope, and ice climbing every Saturday
• Develop team dynamics between groups of 10-20 individuals through trust/collaborative games and reflection
• Maintain a safe climbing area through ANSI and ACCT regulations
• Teach in our annual instructor training to help new instructors
